Thong Sala
The Main Spot
Season: February–April (SE trade winds, 15–28 knots). Best months: March–April.
Water: Flat-water lagoon, knee-deep entry, sandy bottom. Water temperature 28–30°C. No reef, no rocks — ideal for first lessons.
Wind direction: Northeast — side-onshore, holding beginners close to shore and making rescues simple. Builds reliably by 10 am, peaks 12–4 pm.
Why we teach here: The protected lagoon lets beginners stand up, practice board starts and develop confidence without fighting swell. 90 % of first lessons on Koh Phangan happen here.
Access: 10 minutes from Thong Sala ferry pier by scooter, taxi or on foot. Our school is right on the beach.
Ban Tai
Long Beach, Light Chop
Season: February–April (SE wind, 12–22 knots). Also works May–Sep in SW season.
Water: Sandy bottom, waist-deep entry, light chop from the onshore wind angle. Longer downwind run than Thong Sala thanks to the extended beach.
Wind direction: SE/SW — slightly more side-shore than Thong Sala, cleaner for carving and transitions. Less crowded with kites during peak season.
Best for: Riders who have completed a beginner course and want more space and a bit of chop challenge. Free-riding in a relaxed setting with beachside restaurants nearby.
Access: 5–10 minutes east of Thong Sala pier by scooter along the coastal road.
Chaloklum
North Coast Bay
Season: December–January (NE/NW winds, 12–20 knots). Best when the NE trades are fully established.
Water: Sheltered bay with manageable chop. Headlands on either side reduce swell. Coral reef off the headlands — stay in the main bay area.
Wind direction: NE/NW, cross-shore — the north shore position gives clean wind access during the NE season. Open water to the north for long sessions.
Best for: Experienced and independent riders visiting in December–January. Local fishing-village atmosphere, uncrowded water. Ask us for conditions before making the 25-minute drive.
Access: 25 minutes north of Thong Sala by scooter. Ride the winding coastal road around the island's north tip.
Haad Rin
East Wind & Clear Water
Season: February–April, when the SE trade wind creates cross-shore conditions. Reliable east wind sessions are shorter windows — check the forecast the evening before.
Water: Clear turquoise water, sandy patches with some coral and reef near the edges of the bay. Tide-dependent — launch and land on the sandy centre strip.
Wind direction: East to east-northeast — side-shore to cross-shore, which delivers clean lift and excellent angles for boosting. One of the few east-facing beaches on the island.
Best for: Intermediate to advanced riders who want variety and a photogenic backdrop. Not suitable for beginners — reef awareness and self-rescue skills required.
Access: 40–45 minutes from Thong Sala by scooter or 30 minutes by taxi via the main road over the hills.
Hin Kong
Sunset Sessions
Season: October–November transition winds and occasional northwest wind days in May–September. West wind is not the dominant pattern on Koh Phangan — but when it blows here, conditions are exceptional.
Water: Very flat, glassy water sheltered by the island's central hills from the dominant northeast and southwest swells. Sandy bottom, easy entry. One of the flattest water surfaces on the island.
Wind direction: West to northwest — side-offshore, producing side-shore riding conditions. Experienced riders get long upwind runs with the full width of the Gulf of Thailand downwind.
Best for: Experienced riders chasing unusual wind windows and pristine flat-water conditions. Empty beach, zero crowds, golden sunset backdrop. Freestyle and foiling paradise when it fires.
Access: 15 minutes west of Thong Sala by scooter. Easy sealed road all the way to the beach.

Frequently Asked
Questions
Thong Sala Beach is the best spot for beginners — flat-water lagoon, sandy bottom, consistent SE wind February–April. It is where our school is based and where 95% of first lessons happen on the island.
Not quite year-round — October and November are off-season with insufficient wind. The SE season (mid-January–April) serves Thong Sala, Baan Tai and Haad Rin. The SW monsoon (June–September) works at Thong Sala, Baan Tai and Hin Kong. Chaloklum on the north shore activates in the NE season (December–January) for experienced riders. May is a transition month — inconsistent.
Chaloklum Bay during the SW season offers the longest open-water downwind runs. Hin Kong Sunset Beach delivers the flattest water on the island when the west wind fires — perfect for sliders, unhooked tricks and kite-loop practice.
No. Haad Rin has reef near the edges of the bay and the east wind windows are narrow and require good self-rescue skills. It is an intermediate to advanced spot only. Beginners should always start at Thong Sala.
During May and October–November, wind is lighter and unpredictable. Many riders switch to e-foil (no wind needed) or wing foil on light-wind days. In June–September, experienced kiters ride Baan Tai and Hin Kong for the SW season. December–January brings NE winds to Chaloklum on the north coast.
