Kite Safari Egypt:
Red Sea Liveaboard Guide 2026

When the wind drops in Thailand, it rises in Egypt. Kite Club Koh Phangan runs Red Sea kite safaris from Hurghada every April–May and September–October — flat warm water, consistent 18–30 kn winds, uninhabited desert islands.

Why Egypt and the Red Sea?

Thailand is one of the best kite destinations in the world — but even here, the wind has an off-season. From late April through May, and again from mid-September through October, the Gulf of Thailand calms down and consistent riding days become rare at Koh Phangan. Kite Club uses this window to run a Red Sea kite safari in Egypt: a destination where the wind blows strongest precisely when Thailand goes quiet.

The Red Sea between Hurghada and the uninhabited offshore islands offers conditions that are genuinely different from Southeast Asia — flat, warm, turquoise water with no swell, steady thermic and trade winds that build through the morning and hold all day, and a landscape of coral reefs, desert coastline, and uninhabited islands that makes every sailing day visually remarkable. For kitesurfers who spend most of the year riding in Thailand, a week on the Red Sea provides a complete contrast: different kite sizes, different launch techniques for open-water spots, and riding conditions that develop skills in ways that Gulf of Thailand sessions simply do not.

The practical logic is straightforward: rather than a week in Thailand where sessions are unpredictable, your existing Kite Club instructor takes you to a destination that is in its prime season. Same team, same instruction quality, completely different environment.

Wind & Water Conditions on the Red Sea

The Red Sea is a natural wind channel. The coastline between Hurghada and the offshore islands runs roughly north-northwest to south-southeast, and the prevailing wind direction is consistent with this alignment: predominantly northerly in spring and autumn, with a thermic component that builds the breeze from late morning through early afternoon. The result is extremely reliable riding windows — typically 11 am to 5 pm, with wind that accelerates predictably rather than gusting unpredictably.

Month Avg Wind (kts) Kite Size (typical) Water Temp
End April18–2410–12 m26–28°C
May20–289–12 m27–29°C
Late Sept22–307–10 m29–31°C
October20–289–12 m28–30°C

Water temperature on the Red Sea is warm year-round — warmer in late September and October than in Thailand's peak season. A 2–3 mm shorty wetsuit or long rash guard is sufficient for April; by October, a rash guard alone is fine for most riders. Air temperature sits between 30–36°C, making shade on the boat essential during the midday surface transport.

The Kite Spots

The safari operates from Hurghada and positions the boat among the offshore islands of the northern Red Sea. The spots visited depend on the weekly forecast, but these are the anchors of every departure:

Spot Type Why It's Special
Tawilla IslandFlat-water lagoonKnee-deep clear water, perfect for jumps and beginners to open water
Ashrafi IslandProtected bayConsistent side-shore wind, deep water for advanced tricks
Abu MonkarOpen water channelAccelerated winds 3–5 kts above surrounding area, chop for wakestyle
Geisum BaySheltered flat waterIdeal refresher spot, calm conditions for technique work
Siyul KebiraReef-edge channelDownwind runs along coral shelves, snorkelling between sessions

All spots are uninhabited — the yacht is your base, anchor point, and beach club. Between kite sessions, the islands are yours: snorkelling on untouched coral reefs, beach time on desert sand, and evening anchoring in absolute quiet far from resort areas.

When to Go — Thailand Low Season Logic

The safari windows are timed precisely to match Koh Phangan's low season, so students who trained with Kite Club in the Thai peak season can keep riding without a months-long gap:

Window Thailand Status Red Sea Status Departures
Late April – MayWind fading, irregularStrong thermic, 18–28 ktsMultiple weekly departures
Late Sept – OctoberLow season, monsoon rainStrongest window, 22–30 ktsMultiple weekly departures

Late September to October is the single best kiting window on the Red Sea — wind is at its annual peak, water temperature is at its warmest, and the tourist crowds from the European summer have thinned. Riders using 7–9 m kites in these conditions are in ideal territory for progressing jumps and advanced technique.

April–May is the preferred choice for those who have just finished a Thai kite season and want to continue immediately. Conditions are lighter — more accessible for riders at IKO Level 2 who completed their course in Thailand — and air temperatures are slightly lower than the September window.

What's Included & What to Bring

Every package covers:

  • 7-night liveaboard accommodation (A/C cabins with private or shared bathrooms)
  • 3 meals per day, snacks, non-alcoholic drinks
  • Full kite equipment (kites 7–14 m, twin tip + directional, bar and lines)
  • IKO-certified instructor present at every session
  • 2 safety zodiac boats monitoring all sessions
  • Snorkelling equipment (masks, fins, vests)
  • Evening yoga on the sun deck
  • Island barbecue nights
  • Equipment maintenance and laundry of sailing clothes

Not included: flights to/from Hurghada, Egypt visa (~25 USD, most nationalities pay on arrival), travel insurance, personal alcohol, optional scuba dives (30 EUR/dive), harness (bring your own or rent for 30 EUR/week).

Packing List

SPF 50+ sunscreen (bring more than you think — 6 hours daily water time at this latitude burns fast), rash guard or 2–3 mm shorty (April) / rash guard only (October), swimwear ×3, casual evening clothes, waterproof bag for deck sessions, neoprene water shoes (optional, reef protection), IKO certification card, Egyptian visa or arrival fee USD cash, any personal medications. You do not need to bring kite equipment.

Who Is It For?

The Egypt safari is designed for:

  • IKO Level 2+ riders (body dragging and water starts in progress) — April window especially suitable
  • IKO Level 3 independent riders looking to improve freestyle and jumps — September window with stronger wind
  • Kite Club students from the Thai season who want to continue riding without a gap
  • Solo travellers who want a structured week with a group of like-minded kiters
  • Couples or small groups — VIP package provides a fully private boat
  • Non-kiting partners who enjoy snorkelling, diving, yoga, and boat life

Complete beginners cannot join the open-water safari sessions — you need enough kite control that the instructor can coach rather than rescue. If you completed a beginner course in Thailand and are consolidating your water starts, the April safari is an excellent next step in a low-wind environment before tackling the September conditions.

How to Book

April–May departures fill 6–8 weeks in advance. September–October departures move quickly once the Thai season ends and students look to extend their riding. To reserve your spot:

  1. Contact us via WhatsApp: +66 96 720 3910
  2. Confirm your target window and preferred package
  3. Share your current IKO level (or recent riding experience)
  4. Pay a 30% deposit to hold your cabin
  5. Balance due 4 weeks before departure

A Day on the Red Sea Liveaboard

Days on the Egypt safari have a rhythm unlike any land-based kite holiday. The crew checks the wind at 6 am and the itinerary is confirmed over breakfast — in most cases the boat is already positioned at the first spot by the time sessions begin. Mornings on the Red Sea are the premium session window: the thermic wind builds from 10–11 am and reaches its daily peak by early afternoon, so the first kite session catches the freshest, most consistent part of the day.

The first session runs from approximately 10 am to 1 pm. The instructor manages the group from a safety zodiac, communicating via signal flags and short-range radio. Because all riders are on open water away from shore infrastructure, the zodiac is always within 200 metres. For riders practising jumps, this close-proximity coaching produces fast progression — feedback is immediate and the water surface at Tawilla or Ashrafi is flat enough to isolate technique without dealing with chop.

Midday breaks happen on the boat, anchored off uninhabited islands. The cook prepares lunch while riders rest, snorkel the coral beneath the hull, or simply lie on the sun deck. There are no beach bars, no restaurants, no other tourists — just the boat, the reef, and the desert island. This isolation is one of the most distinctive aspects of the Red Sea safari compared to land-based kite camps, and it is consistently the element that participants find hardest to describe and most want to return to.

Afternoon sessions run 2–5 pm, capturing the second wind window. By late afternoon the breeze begins to ease and the boat repositions towards the next day's spot. Sundowners happen at anchor in a sheltered bay, often accompanied by the outline of desert cliffs turning orange in the low sun. Dinner is cooked on board; evenings typically involve the day's video review, gear prep, and early sleep. A week of this rhythm produces rapid physical improvement in riding and a deep sense of disconnection from land-based life that most participants find they had not anticipated.

Sample 7-Day Itinerary

Day Programme
Day 1Arrive Hurghada Airport. Transfer to marina, boat check-in, equipment briefing, safety review. Sunset sail to first anchorage.
Day 2Tawilla Island. Two kite sessions (flat-water lagoon). Technique focus: water starts, upwind riding, first jumps. Snorkelling break.
Day 3Ashrafi Island. Two sessions in protected bay. Advanced riders: kite loops and megaloop practice. Beginner track: consolidating board control.
Day 4Abu Monkar channel. Highest wind of the week. Shorter kites. Focus on riding in strong, gusty conditions. Evening: island barbecue on the beach.
Day 5Geisum Bay. Calmer conditions — technique refinement, video analysis session. Optional scuba dive in the afternoon. Yoga on deck at sunset.
Day 6Siyul Kebira. Downwind runs along the reef edge, snorkelling on untouched coral. Two sessions. Final evening on the boat: dinner, group debrief.
Day 7Return to Hurghada marina. Breakfast on board, gear pack-up. Airport transfer. Comfort and VIP packages include full transfer; Standard package marina drop.

The itinerary above is indicative — wind conditions on the Red Sea are consistent enough that this schedule runs as planned in the great majority of departures, with only spot selection varying according to the forecast. Unlike safaris in less reliable wind zones, weather days on the Red Sea are genuinely rare.
