Equipment Guide

The twin-tip is the standard kiteboard for 90% of riders worldwide. It's symmetrical (both ends identical), rides equally well in both directions, and is available in sizes from 130 to 145 cm. Choosing the right size and flex significantly affects how fast you progress.

Beginner boards (135–142 cm, wide outline) have more volume and a flatter rocker — easier to get out of the water on water starts, more stable in body drag, and more forgiving of technique errors. As skills improve, riders typically move to smaller, more aggressive shapes.

Rocker: Flat vs Continuous vs 3-Stage

Rocker is the curvature of the board from tip to tip when laid flat. A board with high rocker (significant curve) absorbs chop better and is softer in the water. A flat-rocker board is faster and more direct — pops off the water better for jumps, holds upwind angle better.

For beginners: flat to moderate rocker (under 5 cm total rocker) makes water starts easier and upwind riding more efficient. The stability and predictability of a flat-rocker board suits the beginner learning phase better than a soft chop-absorbing rocker.

Board Flex

A stiffer board transmits power directly to your feet — faster response, better for upwind, slightly harsher in chop. A softer board absorbs impact — more comfortable, more forgiving for beginners who are falling regularly.

Kite Club's beginner lesson boards are medium flex — the right balance for learning. When buying your first board, avoid very stiff race-oriented boards (high performance but unforgiving) and very soft boards (too much flex blurs the kite pull feedback you need as a learner).

Twin-Tip Brands in 2026

  • Slingshot — RPM / Misfit. Industry standard for durability and wide availability of replacement parts. Excellent beginner and intermediate options.
  • Cabrinha — CBL / FSS. Well-balanced boards known for all-round performance at beginner-intermediate level.
  • North — Jaime / Vegas. Performance-oriented. Beginner range slightly smaller selection than Slingshot/Cabrinha.
  • Duotone — Spike / Select. Premium build quality. Often the first-board recommendation from IKO-affiliated schools.
Expert Tip

The first board you buy does not need to be the board you ride forever. Buy a well-known brand board in the correct size for your weight at a fair used price. In 6–12 months of regular riding, your board preference will be clear. Spending extra on a premium first board before you know your style is rarely worthwhile.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What size twin-tip for a 70 kg beginner?+

A 138–142 cm board in the intermediate category with medium flex and moderate rocker. At Koh Phangan, your instructor uses 136–142 cm boards for most riders in this weight range in 15–22 knot conditions.

How much does a new twin-tip cost?+

New boards from quality brands (Slingshot, Cabrinha, Duotone, North): 400–700 EUR. Used boards in good condition: 150–350 EUR. Bindings (footstraps and pads) are sometimes separate: 80–150 EUR new.

What is the difference between a twin-tip and a directional board?+

A twin-tip is symmetrical — identical on both ends. You ride it in both directions without changing stance. A directional board (surfboard shape) has a defined front and tail — you must change stance (tack) to change direction. Directionals are used in surf waves and for kite foiling. Twin-tips are standard for flat water and most riding styles.

Can I learn to kiteboard on a very small board?+

No — small boards (under 132 cm) are difficult for beginners. They have less surface area for the water start push, sink more during setup, and require better technique to ride. Start on a board appropriate for your weight and only move to smaller boards when your technique is solid.
