Wing foil equipment has more variables than most board sports. Wing size, board volume, mast length, and front wing area all affect how the system performs. This guide gives clear starting points for different rider types.

Choosing a Wing
| Rider Weight | 14–18 kts | 18–22 kts | 22–28 kts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 60 kg | 4m² | 3.5m² | 3m² |
| 60–75 kg | 5m² | 4m² | 3.5m² |
| 75–90 kg | 5.5m² | 5m² | 4m² |
| 90+ kg | 6m² | 5.5m² | 4.5m² |
Wings are sized in square metres. Larger wings generate more power in lighter wind; smaller wings are easier to control in strong wind. As a beginner, having two wing sizes (one for light days, one for strong) is ideal. Most riders start with one medium size and add a second wing once they understand their local conditions.
The Foil Board
Beginner boards: 130–180 cm, 80–130 litres (volume). High volume floats better in the water during setup and is more forgiving of weight shifts. As you progress, volume decreases — advanced riders use 40–70 litre boards that require precise balance.
Board stiffness matters: carbon boards are lighter and more responsive. Glassfibre/epoxy boards are heavier but more affordable and durable for learning. Beginner recommendation: 85–110 litre board in glass construction. Save carbon for when technique is established.
The Foil System
- Mast length — 60–70 cm for beginners. Shorter mast means the board flies lower, reducing the height of falls and the recovery distance if the foil ventilates. Advance to 75–90 cm masts as skill develops.
- Front wing area — 1,500–2,000 cm² for beginners. Large wings generate lift at low speeds — critical for early foil starts. Reduce wing area as technique and speed develop.
- Rear stabilizer — Matched to front wing by the manufacturer. Do not mix unmatched front wing and stabilizer from different systems — the pitch stability will be unpredictable.
- Fuselage length — Shorter fuselage = more maneuverable, less stable. Longer fuselage = more stable, less turning ability. Beginners: longer fuselage (75–85 cm).
Wing Foil Brands 2026
- Duotone — Slick Wing. One of the most popular learning wings — good trim range, easy depower, durable.
- Naish — Wingsurfer. Compact shape, good for lighter wind. Popular in schools.
- Cabrinha — Mantis. Known for forward speed and good light-wind performance.
- North — Seek. Entry-level pricing with solid build quality.
Buy wing size first, board second. Your wing size depends on your weight and local wind — this is fixed. Your board can be borrowed or rented while you learn on the right wing size. Do not buy a board before taking at least 3 sessions — you will know much better what volume and shape suits you after 9 hours on the water.
Frequently Asked Questions
Complete new setup (wing + board + foil system): 3,000–6,000 EUR. Quality used setup: 1,500–3,000 EUR. Individual components: wing 600–900 EUR new, board 800–1,500 EUR, foil system (mast + wings + fuselage) 800–1,500 EUR. A realistic total for a solid second-hand learning setup is around 2,000 EUR.
Potentially — if your surfboard has tail inserts that accept a foil mast plate. Most surfboards do not have foil inserts. You also need high enough volume for stability. Specific wing foil boards are purpose-built and strongly preferred over adapted surfboards for learning.
The wing packs into a compact bag (3–4 kg). The board and foil are the heavy items: 10–15 kg combined. Total kit weight: 15–20 kg. Airlines charge 80–200 EUR for oversized/overweight bags. Most regular wing foilers who travel prefer to rent boards at their destination and travel with just their preferred wing.
A foil wing (for wing foiling) has two handles you hold by hand — no lines, no attachment to a harness, instant depower when you let go. A kite is connected to a harness by lines, generates significantly more power, and requires a full kite control system. Wings are simpler, safer, and more accessible. Kites offer more power range and upwind performance.
