Common Questions
Wing foiling has a shorter ramp to the first session feeling — you can hold the wing and feel power on day one without kite management skills. Kitesurfing takes more dedicated instruction (wind window, bar pressure, body drag) before you get on the board. However, once independent, kitesurfers have more options and higher top speeds. Most beginners can ride independently after 3 days of kitesurfing or 2 days of wing foiling at our flat-water lagoon.
Kitesurfing: 12 knots minimum, 15–22 knots ideal for learning. Wing foiling: 12 knots minimum, best at 15–20 knots. Windsurfing: 8–10 knots is enough to learn, 12–18 knots ideal. E-foil: zero wind needed — electric motor does all the work. On Koh Phangan during SE season (mid-Jan–Apr), wind is typically 10–22 knots — ideal for all three wind sports.
Yes — and many guests do. A popular combination is a Discovery kite course (2h) on a windy day and an e-foil session on a lighter day. If you have 5+ days, some riders do the Full Beginner kite course and a wing foil intro. We recommend focusing on one wind sport per trip to progress faster and retain what you learn.
Wing foiling is the most natural transition for surfers — the ocean reading, balance, and pop-up feel familiar. Many surfers ride their first wing session in half the time of a complete beginner. Kitesurfing is also excellent for surfers once the kite skills are mastered, as it opens up wave riding and downwind runs.
E-foil is the safest — no kite overhead, electric motor control, instructor walking alongside in shallow water. Windsurfing is also very safe — the sail drops away if you fall. Kitesurfing and wing foiling carry more gear complexity but are very safe when taught by IKO/IWO certified instructors in a flat-water environment like Thong Sala Beach.
