Which Season is Right For You?
Complete Beginners
Flat water and consistent NE winds make learning safer and faster. Less chop means easier body drag and waterstart. Most students reach independent level during the SE season.
Advanced Riders
SW monsoon chop adds challenge. Great for working on jumps, transitions, and wave riding. The lighter 15–22 kts window suits large kites and foil training.
Intermediate
Intermediate riders benefit from both seasons. SE season to consolidate upwind riding and gybe. SW season to progress in choppier, more dynamic conditions.
Why Koh Phangan for Kitesurfing?
Koh Phangan sits in the Gulf of Thailand, protected from the open ocean swell but positioned perfectly to catch both the SE trade winds and the SW monsoon. This means two usable seasons per year — a rare advantage compared to most kite destinations that have only one.
Thong Sala Beach, on the west side of the island, is the main kitesurfing location. The beach runs NNW–SSE, and during the SE season the wind arrives cross-onshore — the safest and most consistent angle for lessons and recreational riding.
The water temperature stays between 27–30°C year-round, so no wetsuit is needed at any time of year. That alone makes it one of the most comfortable kite spots in the world.
How to Plan Your Kite Trip
For a first-time learner, aim for February–April. Winds are strongest and most consistent during these months, and you'll have the best chance of completing all lesson days without wind cancellations.
We recommend planning a minimum of 7 days on the island to complete the Full Beginner Course (3 days of lessons) with buffer days for low-wind days. For the Independent Rider Course (5 days of lessons), plan 10–12 days.
All lessons are rescheduled at no charge if the wind is not suitable for safe learning on your booked day. We monitor the forecast daily and contact you the evening before each lesson.
Wind Season FAQ
March and April are the peak months. The SE trade winds are at their strongest and most consistent — typically 15–22 knots with flat water at Thong Sala Beach. Most experienced riders plan their trips for these two months. February is almost as good. January is lighter and less crowded.
There are two usable seasons: SE (February–April) and SW (May–September). May and October–November are the main off-season transition months with light, variable winds. December builds slowly. We operate lessons when conditions are suitable throughout both wind seasons.
During peak SE season (mid-January–April): typically 10–22 knots, with March the strongest. June–September SW season: variable 10–22 knots, July–August most reliable. Transition months (May, October–November): 6–14 knots — generally not suitable for kitesurfing lessons.
We monitor the forecast daily and will reschedule your lesson to the next suitable day at no extra charge. If you're on a short trip and wind doesn't cooperate, we can suggest wing foil or e-foil as alternative water experiences. We've run lessons every week during the SE season for years — extended windless periods are very rare February–April.
During peak season (March–April) we recommend booking at least 3–5 days in advance as instructor slots fill up. January, February, and the SW season are less crowded and same-day or next-day booking is usually possible. WhatsApp is the fastest way to check availability: +66 96 720 3910.
Why Koh Phangan
for Kitesurfing?
Koh Phangan sits at GPS 9.93°N, 100.06°E in the Gulf of Thailand — Surat Thani Province. Its reef-protected lagoon at Thong Sala Beach offers conditions you rarely find elsewhere: flat water, shallow sandy bottom (0.5–2 m depth, 100+ m wide), 28 °C water, and SE trade winds reliably arriving February–April. Unlike the Andaman Sea spots, the Gulf peak season coincides with fewer international visitors, meaning uncrowded sessions and available instructor slots even in March.
