Pre-Session Eating

Sessions start from 7:00–8:00 AM. Eat a light, easily digestible breakfast 1.5–2 hours before. The goal: enough energy to sustain 3 hours of moderate physical activity without heaviness or nausea in the water.

  • Good choices — Oatmeal with banana, eggs and rice, smoothie bowl, yogurt with granola, toast with peanut butter
  • Avoid — Heavy fried food, large portions, coffee on an empty stomach (increases dehydration), alcohol the night before
  • Hydration — Drink 500 ml of water before your session and bring another 500 ml to the beach. 3 hours in 30°C heat produces significant sweat loss.

Post-Session Recovery

After sessions, priority is: (1) rehydration — 500–750 ml of water immediately; (2) electrolytes — coconut water is ideal and plentiful at Koh Phangan (20–40 THB per young coconut); (3) protein and carbohydrates within 1–2 hours for muscle recovery.

Post-session Thai food is perfect recovery nutrition: rice with chicken or fish, vegetables, and light sauce provides the carb-protein balance ideal for recovery. Avoid waiting 3+ hours to eat post-session — energy crash and delayed recovery are common when riders skip the post-session meal.

Hydration in the Tropics

Koh Phangan's heat and humidity mean dehydration comes faster than most visitors expect. Signs of insufficient hydration during sessions: headache, loss of concentration, poor kite control decisions. All of these feel like fatigue but are often dehydration.

Daily total water intake target for active kite days: 3–4 liters. This sounds like a lot but 3 hours of water sport in 30°C heat depletes fluids quickly. Coconut water (natural electrolytes), watermelon, and pineapple (cheap and plentiful at Koh Phangan markets) all contribute to hydration.

Expert Tip

Pack a 1-liter insulated bottle for the beach. Fill it before your session and drink it all before the end. At 30°C on the beach and in the water, thirst is a lagging indicator — you are already mildly dehydrated by the time you feel thirsty.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I eat Thai street food safely during a kite holiday?+

Yes — Thai street food in Thong Sala is generally very safe and excellent quality. Stick to freshly cooked items (you can see them cooking) and avoid pre-prepared items that have been sitting. Rice dishes, noodle soups, and grilled items from busy stalls are all reliable.

Are there vegetarian or vegan food options near the beach?+

Yes — Koh Phangan has abundant vegetarian and vegan options. Multiple cafes near Thong Sala serve plant-based menus. Thai food naturally includes many vegetable-forward dishes. Tell the restaurant "mai sai nua" (no meat) or ask for tofu substitution.

Should I take electrolyte supplements?+

Electrolyte supplements are useful if you are doing sessions on multiple consecutive days. Salt and potassium loss from sweat, if not replaced by food, leads to muscle cramps — particularly in the calves and forearms during kite sessions. Coconut water is the most natural and palatable electrolyte source at Koh Phangan.

What is the best post-session meal at Thong Sala?+

Pad See Ew or Khao Pad (fried rice) with chicken or eggs from a local restaurant is a consistently good post-session choice. High carbohydrate, moderate protein, easy to digest, and typically 80–120 THB. Larger portions are available at most places for 150–180 THB.
