Ferry Companies and Schedule

The main ferry operators between Koh Samui/Surat Thani and Koh Phangan are Lomprayah and Seatran. Ferries run throughout the day (approximately 6 AM – 7 PM). High-speed catamarans (Lomprayah) take 30 minutes from Samui; regular ferries take 45–60 minutes.

All ferries arrive at Thong Sala pier — the main pier on Koh Phangan. This is convenient for kite visitors as the school is a 10–15 minute walk from the pier. Tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis are always available at the pier (80–150 THB to most accommodation in Thong Sala area).

Getting Around the Island

  • Motorbike rental — 200–350 THB/day. The most common and efficient way. Roads on the west coast (Thong Sala to Haad Rin) are paved and manageable. Roads to the east coast have steep sections — automatic scooter recommended over manual if you are not experienced.
  • Motorbike taxi — 50–200 THB per trip depending on distance. Available throughout Thong Sala town. Ask at your accommodation for the local rate to the kite school.
  • Songthaew (shared pickup truck) — 50–100 THB per person. Runs set routes around the island. Slower but useful for the main Thong Sala–Haad Rin route.
  • Walking — Thong Sala town is walkable. The school is 10–15 minutes walk from the pier area. If you stay in central Thong Sala, a motorbike is not necessary for daily sessions.

Practical Information

SIM card: buy at the Thong Sala ferry pier on arrival. AIS and DTAC both have stalls. Tourist SIM with 15–30 GB data for 7–30 days costs 200–400 THB. 4G coverage is good throughout Thong Sala and most of the west coast.

ATMs: multiple ATMs in Thong Sala town. Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn Bank ATMs accept international cards. Withdrawal fee: 200–220 THB per transaction. Exchange rates at currency exchange booths in Thong Sala (usually near the pier) are better than ATM rates for cash.

Expert Tip

Arrange accommodation and lesson booking before arrival. The pier area can be chaotic with touts on busy ferry days. Knowing exactly where you are going and having confirmation on your phone makes arrival much less stressful.
