Golden Hour at Thong Sala
Thong Sala Beach faces west — this means perfect golden hour light in the afternoon as the sun moves toward the horizon. The 4:30–6:00 PM window produces warm backlit conditions ideal for kite photos: kites backlit against an orange sky, riders silhouetted against the water, spray catching the light.
Morning light (8–10 AM) is also excellent — softer, cooler tones with the sun rising behind the hills on the east side of the island. Morning is typically less windy, which means calmer water reflecting the sky — great for landscape-style kite shots.
Best Shooting Positions
- Beach level, waterline — Low angle from the waterline captures the rider close to the surface with sky and water splitting the frame. Works best in 70–200mm zoom range to compress background.
- Pier or elevated point — Shooting down onto the session area from the Thong Sala pier captures the whole kite and rider plus the water pattern. Good for showing the scale of the kite relative to the rider.
- In the water (snorkel) — Getting in the water with a waterproof camera or housing captures spray and surface-level action. Requires the rider to come close — coordinate with the instructor.
- Drone (DJI) — Aerial footage of kiting at Koh Phangan is spectacular. Check local drone regulations — Koh Phangan has restricted airspace near the port and hospital. Open water areas around Thong Sala are generally fine below 120m.
The best kite photos are taken when the rider is doing something — not just riding in a straight line. Coordinate with your photographer: call out "jump" or "spray" so they can anticipate the action. A rider doing even a small jump or spray turn creates far more dynamic content than passive riding.
Camera Gear for Kite Shooting
Smartphone cameras (iPhone 15 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S24) produce excellent results in good light. For action sports, the challenge is shutter speed — a fast shutter (1/1000s minimum) freezes spray and jump motion. Most modern phones can achieve this in bright daylight.
A GoPro or Insta360 mounted to the helmet or bar gives point-of-view footage that works well for social media. Bar-mounted wide-angle captures the kite above and the water ahead simultaneously. Kite Club can advise on GoPro mount positions based on what footage you want.
The most shareable kite photos from Koh Phangan are taken in late March–April when multiple colorful kites are in the air simultaneously. The visual of 8–12 kites against a blue sky above flat turquoise water is difficult to replicate at most other kite destinations — and Thong Sala delivers it reliably.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — there are local action sports photographers who offer kite session coverage. Ask at the school for current recommendations. Typical rates are 1,500–3,000 THB for a 1–2 hour photo session delivering edited images.
Drone regulations in Thailand require registration for drones over 250g and prohibit flying within 9 km of airports (Koh Samui airport is on a different island, so this does not typically affect Koh Phangan). Check current Thai CAAT drone regulations before flying. Flying low over open water near Thong Sala is generally practiced without issues.
For the best light: 8–10 AM (soft morning light, calm water) or 4:30–6:00 PM (golden hour, warm backlight). Midday (11 AM–2 PM) is harsh with overhead sun creating flat light and squinting subjects.
High contrast colors (red, orange, bright green) photograph well against blue sky and water. White or light-colored kites can wash out against overcast sky. If you are choosing a kite for photography, go saturated and dark rather than pale.
