Why March Is the Best Month

The SE monsoon trade wind is fully established in March. The SE wind direction creates ideal conditions at Thong Sala Beach — sideshore to cross-offshore, which means you can drift downwind safely and return upwind. The wind is strong enough for all kite sizes and consistent enough to plan sessions with confidence.

At its peak (mid-March), 15–25 kites can be in the air simultaneously at Thong Sala. The visual of multiple colored kites against a blue sky above glassy water is the signature image of Koh Phangan kiting. The community energy in this period is unlike any other month.

March for Different Skill Levels

  • Beginners — 18–22 knots is within the learning range. Beginners start on 9–10m kites (smaller than February due to stronger wind). The strong pull makes water starts slightly easier — the kite generates enough power to lift you consistently. Excellent learning month.
  • Intermediates — Ideal — plenty of power, consistent runs, opportunities to work on upwind and gybes. 10–12m kite range. March is when intermediate riders make rapid progress.
  • Advanced — Perfect conditions for jumps, trick attempts, and longer sessions. 8–10m kites. March brings advanced riders from across Asia.
Expert Tip

Book March accommodation and lessons at least 8 weeks ahead. This is our busiest month — private lesson slots and good accommodation near the beach sell out quickly. The best instructor slots (morning sessions with specific instructors) go first.

Practical March Information

Being the peak month, Thong Sala is busier than any other time. Restaurants fill up for dinner. The beach has more people. Traffic on the island increases. Plan to session in the morning (from 8:00 AM) when the wind is ramping up but before the peak afternoon rush. Afternoon sessions have the strongest wind but the most crowded beach.

Local Insight

The last week of March is our favorite: the trade is fully established, the season community has been together for 2 months and everyone knows each other, and the wind is as good as it will be all year. If you can arrange your trip to include the last week of March, do it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does kitesurfing at Koh Phangan cost in March?+

Lesson prices are the same year-round: Discovery 3,500 THB, Beginner Course 11,000 THB, Independent Course 18,000 THB. Accommodation is at peak season rates (10–20% above low season). Budget 800–1,500 THB/day for accommodation + 1,200–2,000 THB/day for meals and transport.

Is March too windy for beginners?+

No — the wind in March (18–25 kts) is within the learning range. We use smaller kites (9–10m for average weight riders) in strong wind to keep power manageable. The flat water and clean wind make March an excellent learning month despite the strength.

How many kite days does March have?+

Typically 24–28 days with sufficient wind for sessions (10+ knots minimum). This is the highest reliability of any month at Koh Phangan. Rest days in March are rare and usually last only one day before wind returns.

Can I book last minute for March?+

For accommodation, last-minute (under 2 weeks) in March is very difficult — good properties near the beach sell out. For lessons, there is slightly more flexibility as we can sometimes accommodate extra students, but private sessions are harder to arrange on short notice. Book as early as possible for March.
