E-Foil

E-foiling at Koh Phangan means riding silently above the water on a battery-powered foilboard — no wind, no waves, no instructor on a jetski. Flat calm water at Thong Sala Beach makes it one of the best spots in Thailand to try this sport.

What Is E-Foiling?

An e-foil is an electric foilboard: a surfboard with an underwater foil (hydrofoil) connected to a battery-powered electric motor. When the motor reaches sufficient speed, the foil generates lift and raises the board — and you — 40–60 cm above the water surface. You ride silently, without touching the water, controlled by a wireless hand remote.

The silence is one of the most distinctive aspects. Unlike jet skis or motorboats, e-foil produces almost no noise or wake. You can hear the water and wind around you as the board glides through the air above the surface.

Who Is E-Foil For?

  • Complete beginners — No previous board sport experience needed. Age 14+. Able to swim comfortably. The remote control makes speed management intuitive — no wind reading required.
  • Wind-sport riders taking a rest day — On no-wind days (common in October–December), e-foil keeps you on the water when kite and wing sessions are not possible.
  • Surfers and foilers — If you already ride a foil board in surf or with a kite, e-foil progression is very fast — the balance and body position translate directly.
  • Over-50 riders — E-foil is physically accessible for almost any fitness level. The board is large and stable; balance demands are manageable. Several riders at Kite Club over 60 have completed their first e-foil session successfully.

The Three Session Levels

SessionDurationPriceWhat Happens
Intro30 min2,000 THBSafety briefing, prone start, first attempts at standing, gentle speed
Foiling60 min3,000 THBStanding + first foil lift, learning to hold height with the remote
Freedom90 min3,500 THBSustained riding at height, directional changes, increasing speed range
Expert Tip

Most riders who do just the Intro session feel they did not get enough time. We strongly recommend the Foiling session (60 min) as your first experience — the extra 30 minutes is where you actually feel the board lift and ride above the water.

Why Koh Phangan Is Ideal for E-Foil

Thong Sala Beach offers flat, sheltered water in a protected bay. Water depth is 1–2 metres in the session area — shallow enough that falls are not dangerous, deep enough for the foil to operate. There are no significant boat waves or tidal surge in this location during lesson hours.

Year-round warm water (28–30°C) means no wetsuit is needed and falls are comfortable. Sessions run in the morning when conditions are calmest — typically 8:00–11:00 AM.

Local Insight

The best months for e-foil in terms of flat, calm water are May through October. From November through April the wind picks up for kite season — the water is still manageable for e-foil but can have small chop in the afternoon.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is e-foil hard to learn?+

The first lift off the water typically happens within 30–45 minutes for most students. Sustained riding at height takes 2–3 sessions. The remote control makes it more intuitive than wind-powered foiling — you control speed directly rather than managing a kite or wing.

Do I need any experience for e-foil?+

No experience needed. E-foil is suitable for complete beginners — no wind knowledge, no kite skills, no surfing background required. Age 14+, basic water comfort.

What should I wear for e-foil?+

Swimwear and a rashguard. The life jacket is provided and mandatory. Water shoes are optional — Thong Sala has a sandy bottom. Sunscreen SPF 50+ is strongly recommended.

How fast does an e-foil go?+

Typical session speed is 15–25 km/h, which is comfortable and safe for learning. Maximum speed on our equipment is approximately 40 km/h — experienced riders can reach this in the Freedom session.
