Safety Guide

E-foiling is one of the safer water sports when properly supervised. Understanding the safety systems, rules, and hazards before your session makes it enjoyable rather than stressful.

Mandatory Safety Equipment

  • Life jacket (impact vest) — Mandatory for all sessions. Provides flotation and impact protection when falling. Provided by Kite Club — no need to bring your own.
  • Board leash — Keeps the board tethered to your ankle when you fall. Prevents the board from drifting away. Always worn during sessions.
  • Remote kill switch — A foam float attached to the hand remote. If the remote is dropped, it floats and the motor stops automatically. The board cannot run away from you.

Session Rules at Koh Phangan

All e-foil sessions at Kite Club operate within a designated session area at Thong Sala Beach. This area is marked with buoys and kept clear of swimmers, boats, and other water users during lesson hours. You do not leave this area without instructor permission.

Speed in the session area is limited to what your instructor sets via remote lock-out — beginners cannot accidentally over-accelerate. The instructor is in the water or on a paddleboard alongside you throughout the session, within shouting distance at all times.

Common Hazards and How to Manage Them

HazardRisk LevelHow It Is Managed
Falling off at speedLow — falls into flat waterLife jacket worn, leash prevents board runaway, fall forward not backward
Propeller contactLow — motor stops on releaseKill switch on remote; motor auto-stops when trigger released; never swim near prop
Collision with board after fallLow-MediumFall forward away from board; life jacket softens impact; instructor nearby
Sun and heatHigh if unprotectedRashguard, SPF50+ sunscreen, session ends by midday in peak months
Shallow water impactLow at Thong SalaSession area minimum depth 1m; instructor knows safe zone boundaries
Expert Tip

When you fall — and you will fall during learning — fall forward and sideways, away from the board. The board stops when the motor releases, but the foil wing is sharp. Falling clear of the board is the one safety habit that matters most.

Who Should Not E-Foil

E-foil is not suitable for riders with active back injuries (the board position requires standing balance), pregnancy, serious heart conditions, or epilepsy. If you have any medical condition that affects balance or coordination, discuss it with us before booking. Age minimum is 14 years.

Local Insight

In five years of e-foil instruction at Koh Phangan, the only injuries we have seen are minor bruising and occasionally a scraped shin from board contact. No serious injuries have occurred in supervised sessions. The main difference between a safe and unsafe session is whether an instructor is in the water with you.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a strong swimmer for e-foil?+

You need to be comfortable floating in water for short periods — you do not need to be a fast swimmer. The life jacket provides flotation, the leash keeps the board nearby, and the instructor is always close. You will not be in deep open water.

What happens if I fall at speed?+

The motor stops when you release the remote trigger. You enter the water and float with the life jacket. The board stops quickly and the leash brings it back to you. Falls in flat water at e-foil speeds are not dangerous — the impact is similar to jumping off a diving board.

Can children do e-foil?+

Minimum age is 14 years. For young riders (14–16) we recommend the Intro session with the remote locked at low speed. They must be able to swim independently and follow safety instructions.

Is the propeller dangerous?+

The propeller stops the moment you release the remote trigger. During sessions, the motor only runs when you actively press the trigger. We brief all riders: never swim near the propeller end of the board while the motor is running. Following this rule eliminates the risk.
