No — it is not too late. Kite Club Koh Phangan has taught students in their 50s and 60s who ride independently today. The oldest student to complete the full course was 68. Kitesurfing after 40 simply requires a slightly different approach than learning at 22.

Why Kitesurfing Works Well for Over-40 Learners
Kitesurfing is not primarily a strength sport — it is a technique sport. The harness transfers 95% of kite load to your hips, not your arms. The critical skills are timing, spatial awareness, and controlled movement — all areas where adults with life experience often outperform teenagers.
The sport also rewards patience. Students who rush body dragging to get on the board faster consistently take longer to reach riding than students who spend time mastering the foundational skills. Adults are generally better at following a methodical progression without impatience.
Physical Considerations for Over-40 Riders
- Recovery time — Your muscles recover more slowly after sessions. Build in a rest day between 3-hour lesson days. The school does not offer 6-hour days for any beginner — sessions are 3 hours maximum regardless of age.
- Back and hip flexibility — The water start position (heels down, hips forward, arms extended) requires hip flexor mobility. Yoga or simple stretching for 2–3 weeks before your trip makes a measurable difference.
- Grip endurance — Gripping the bar for 3 hours builds forearm fatigue. This passes by session 3 for most students. Forearm exercises before your trip (grip strengtheners) reduce this significantly.
- Sun exposure — Older skin is more sun-sensitive. Rashguard (UPF 50+), hat in the morning, and SPF 50+ sunscreen applied before every session. This is not age-specific advice but becomes more important over 40.
Tell your instructor your age and any physical limitations in your first session. IKO instructors are trained to adapt the curriculum for individual riders. A student with a bad knee may start body dragging in a different position. A student with lower back issues may need a modified water start stance. We work with you, not a generic script.
Realistic Timeline for Over-40 Learners
| Session | Typical Outcome | Over-40 Note |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 (3h) | Land kite, first body drag | Often identical to younger students — technique beats youth here |
| Day 2 (3h) | Upwind body drag | May need extra focus — patience pays off |
| Day 3 (3h) | First water start attempts | 10–30% of students stand up on Day 3; most on Day 4 |
| Day 4 (3h) | First real rides | Most over-40 students reach this — timeline is 1–2 days longer than average |
| Day 5–8 (3h each) | Riding, upwind, self-rescue | Progression matches younger students once riding is established |
What Over-40 Students Say
"I was convinced I was too old. My instructor never made me feel that way. On Day 4 I stood up and rode 100 metres. One of the best moments of my life." — Marco, 52, Italy, March 2025.
"I came with my 25-year-old son. He got up on Day 3, I got up on Day 5. He is still faster in the air; I am better at reading the wind." — Jan, 47, Netherlands, February 2026.
Over-40 students at Koh Phangan have a higher course completion rate than the overall average. We believe this is because older students commit to the full course rather than giving up after Day 2, and they communicate better with instructors about what they need.
Frequently Asked Questions
There is no maximum age. The oldest student Kite Club has taught is 68, who completed the Beginner Course. Physical fitness matters more than age. If you can swim 200m without stopping and have no active joint or cardiac conditions, you are a candidate.
We recommend it for anyone over 50 with any history of cardiac, joint, or spinal issues. The sport involves sustained moderate exertion (similar to a brisk 3-hour walk) plus occasional bursts of higher intensity. Most over-50 students are cleared by any general practitioner who understands the actual demands.
At Kite Club, sessions are maximum 2:1 (two students per instructor). If you prefer private lessons (1:1), this is available and often recommended for over-40 students who benefit from more personalized coaching. Contact us to arrange private sessions.
At Koh Phangan the Beginner Course (11,000 THB) covers 6 hours and takes most over-40 students to first rides. Some need one extra session (3,500 THB as a Refresh Lesson) to consolidate riding. The extra cost is minimal and most students consider every session worthwhile.
