At Koh Phangan, Windguru with the GFS model is the most reliable for 24–48 hour forecasts. Beyond 48 hours, all models have significant uncertainty — use longer-range forecasts for rough planning, not session decisions.

How to Read a Forecast

The key numbers: wind speed (knots), wind direction (degrees), and gusts (peak speed). For kitesurfing at Koh Phangan: 12–18 knots is good for beginners (lighter wind, manageable kite), 9–20 knots is ideal for intermediates, 25+ knots requires experience and appropriate kite sizing.

Wind direction matters for which side of the island is usable. Thong Sala Beach (west-facing) works best on SE and S winds (which come across the Gulf from the right direction). N and NW winds may create cross-shore or onshore conditions that are less consistent for flat water.

Expert Tip

The morning forecast and the actual afternoon wind at Koh Phangan often differ by 3–5 knots, with afternoon being stronger as thermal heating builds wind speed. Book morning sessions for lighter, steadier conditions (better for beginners) and expect afternoon to be gustier.

What Koh Phangan Locals Know

Wind at Thong Sala is affected by the island's topography. The hills to the NE of Thong Sala create a slight wind shadow effect on NE winds — the forecast may show 15 knots but the beach sees 12. On SE and S winds (the primary kite season), the water is open in front of the beach and the forecast is more accurate.

Local Insight

Kite Club shares daily wind reports via WhatsApp to all registered students. This report is based on the actual morning reading at the beach, not the forecast model. Students who rely on the school's WhatsApp updates rather than apps alone make better session decisions.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What wind speed is needed for kitesurfing?+

Minimum is approximately 12 knots for a large (14–15m) kite on a light rider. Comfortable beginner learning happens in 14–20 knots. Below 12 knots, kite power is usually insufficient for reliable water starts. Above 25 knots, beginners should use smaller kites or sit out.

Why does the forecast say 20 knots but the beach feels stronger?+

Forecasts show gradient wind — wind speed at a reference height. At the water surface, terrain effects, thermal turbulence, and local geography modify this. Gustiness (difference between average and peak) is often higher than the forecast suggests in tropical environments.

How far in advance is the Koh Phangan forecast reliable?+

24 hours: reliable enough to plan a session. 48 hours: reliable for direction and rough speed. 72+ hours: use for rough planning only — significant model divergence is common. During peak SE season (Feb–Apr), the forecast reliability extends to 48–72 hours because the trade wind pattern is stable.

Should I cancel my kite session if rain is forecast?+

Light rain does not cancel sessions — we kite in rain if the wind is right. Heavy rain, thunder, or lightning within 30 km does cancel sessions — the risk is not rain but electrical storms. Check the thunderstorm probability in the forecast, not just the rain probability.
