February is the heart of kite season at Koh Phangan. The SE trade wind delivers consistent 14–20 knot SE winds over glass-flat water. For beginners, it is arguably better than March — the slightly lighter wind is more manageable for first lessons.

Why February Is Outstanding for Beginners

The 14–18 knot range in February is the sweet spot for beginner learning. Strong enough to generate reliable kite pull and consistent body drag. Gentle enough that the kite feels manageable and gusts are mild. Students learning in moderate, steady wind develop technique faster than those learning in strong, gusty conditions where survival instincts override skill-building.

February also has the fewest no-wind days of the entire year at Koh Phangan — the NE trade is at its most consistent and established. Planning a 10-day beginner course around February nearly guarantees enough good wind days to complete the full progression.

February vs March vs April

  • February — Slightly lighter wind (14–20 kts), very flat water, best wind reliability, slightly cooler air. Best for beginners and first-time kite learners.
  • March — Stronger wind (18–25 kts), still flat water, highest energy season. Best for intermediates and advanced riders.
  • April — Slightly lighter than March (16–22 kts), flat water, end of season atmosphere. Good for all levels; more social at this point in the season.
Expert Tip

February is the most reliable booking month for guaranteed wind-based activities. Unlike March which has more variance (some very strong days mixed with lighter days), February is steady and predictable. If your schedule is fixed and you cannot afford wind-day losses, February is the safest choice.

February Crowds and Booking

February is busy but not at maximum capacity compared to the March–April peak. Accommodation is available with 3–4 weeks notice in most categories. Kite lessons are in high demand — book 2–3 weeks ahead for group sessions, 1 week for private.

Local Insight

February is when many repeat kite visitors prefer to come — they have learned by experience that the lighter, steadier wind is better for their progression than the stronger but gustier March wind. First-time visitors often plan for March (peak) but experienced riders often prefer February.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cold in February at Koh Phangan?+

No — February air temperature is 27–32°C. Evenings can feel slightly cooler (24–26°C) which is refreshing. Water temperature is 27–28°C — warm and comfortable for hours in the water. No wetsuit needed.

Does it rain in February?+

February is one of the driest months. Brief showers occur but are infrequent and typically short. Rain does not cancel kite sessions — thunderstorms do. February has very low thunderstorm frequency, making it the most session-reliable month.

How busy is the Full Moon Party in February?+

The Full Moon Party happens monthly regardless of the calendar (sometimes twice in one calendar month). It occurs at Haad Rin Beach, on the opposite side of the island from Thong Sala. It does not significantly affect the kite community around Thong Sala but does bring extra visitors to the island overall.

Is it worth coming to Koh Phangan just for one week in February?+

Absolutely. A one-week trip in February can realistically include: 5 lesson days (Discovery + Beginner Course or first half of Independent), 1–2 rest days, and solid progress to first rides or beyond. Budget 11,000 THB for Beginner Course plus accommodation and meals.
