April vs March vs February

March is generally considered the single best month for kitesurfing at Koh Phangan: strongest consistent wind, flattest water, ideal temperature. April is excellent but averages 2–3 knots lighter than peak March. For intermediate and advanced riders, the difference is minimal — both months are outstanding. For beginners, April's slightly lighter wind can actually be an advantage.

February has more consistent wind than April in terms of direction but averages slightly lighter than March. All three months (February, March, April) represent the core kite season at Koh Phangan — the choice between them is mostly about availability and price rather than wind quality.

Who April Is Best For

  • Beginners — 16–20 knot SE trade wind is ideal for first lessons — strong enough to learn on, not so strong that it's overwhelming. The flat water at Thong Sala is at its best.
  • Intermediates — Enough wind for consistent sessions on 9–12m kites. Board sports experience accelerates quickly in April's flat water.
  • Advanced riders — Wind is slightly lighter than March — larger kite sizes needed. April is excellent for learning kite foiling in the lighter early-morning sessions.
Expert Tip

April often ends with the wind fading in the last week as the SE monsoon transition begins. Check the long-range forecast if your trip dates fall in the last week of April. Mid-April is safer for guaranteed wind than late April.

Practical April Information

April has Thai New Year (Songkran) in mid-month — typically April 13–15. Kite Club operates during Songkran with reduced scheduling as many local staff travel. Book sessions before or after the Songkran dates if possible. The holiday also means accommodation prices are higher than usual around April 12–17.

Local Insight

April evenings at Thong Sala are the best social time of the kite season. The community has been together for 3–4 months by April — there are regular evening gatherings at beach bars, and the shared progress of a whole season's community creates a uniquely energetic atmosphere.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is April a good month for a beginner kite trip?+

Yes — April is one of the best months for beginners. Wind in the 16–20 knot range is ideal for first lessons, and flat water at Thong Sala means falls are safe and body drag is efficient. Book the Beginner Course (11,000 THB) and expect to reach first rides by Day 4.

How does April compare to peak season in price?+

April is slightly more affordable than February–March for lessons and accommodation, as the peak demand shifts slightly to earlier in the season. Prices are not dramatically different but you may find more availability in April than in late March.

Does the wind ever stop completely in April?+

Short lulls of 1–2 no-wind days occur even in April. The NE trade is generally consistent but not guaranteed every single day. If you are visiting specifically for kite lessons, build 2–3 buffer days into your trip to account for potential no-wind days.

What kite size for April conditions?+

For a 70 kg rider: 10–12m in 18–22 knot conditions. On lighter April days (14–16 knots), 12–14m may be preferred. Your instructor selects the right size for your weight and the day's wind — you do not need to know this in advance.
