January at Koh Phangan is the building season — the NE trade wind is establishing itself after December's transition. You get some excellent kite days (especially mid-to-late January) mixed with lighter days. It's quieter and more affordable than peak season.

January Conditions
| Parameter | January Average | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wind speed | 12–18 knots | Variable — some excellent days, some lighter |
| Wind direction | NE / SE | Transitioning from NE to SE trade as month progresses |
| Wind days | 15–20 per month | More no-wind days than Feb–Apr |
| Water state | Generally flat | Occasional chop on NE days at some spots |
| Air temperature | 26–30°C | Pleasantly cool compared to March–April |
Who Should Come in January
January suits: budget-conscious kite visitors who want to avoid peak-season prices but accept some risk of no-wind days; beginners who prefer lighter wind (14–16 knots is actually ideal for first lessons); photographers and yoga visitors who split time between kite and other Koh Phangan activities.
January is not ideal for riders who have limited holiday time and need maximum wind-session days — the 15–20 wind days per month versus February's 22–26 means more potential non-kite days. Build at least 3–4 buffer days into a January trip.
Early, Mid, and Late January
- Early January (1–10) — Most variable — continuation of December transitional weather. Wind unreliable, 10–15 knots on good days.
- Mid January (11–20) — NE trade establishing. Better consistency, 12–18 knots. Kite sessions become more predictable.
- Late January (21–31) — Best of January — approaching February quality. 15–20 knot SE wind, flat water, good session reliability.
If January is your only option, plan to arrive in the second week (January 10–14) and leave in the first week of February. This straddles the best of the building season with the beginning of peak season and maximizes your wind days.
January Advantages
Off-peak prices: accommodation is 15–25% cheaper than March–April. Lessons are available with short notice — no waiting for group spots. The beach is less crowded, which means more space in the session area and calmer conditions at the school.
Some of our most productive learning sessions happen in January for exactly these reasons — less crowding, more instructor attention, and the slightly lighter wind actually helps beginners develop technique without survival stress. Late January into February is one of our favorite periods for new students.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — with realistic expectations. You will not get the consistent 12–20 knot SE conditions of December–April every day, but you will get good kite days, lower prices, a less crowded beach, and a relaxed atmosphere. Plan a 12–14 day trip for a January visit to ensure enough wind days.
January's lighter winds often require larger kites. A 70 kg rider might use a 12–14m kite in January versus 10–12m in March. Kite Club carries the full size range — your instructor selects appropriately for each day's wind.
Kite Club is open year-round including over New Year's. January 1 may have reduced sessions depending on weather. Contact us in advance to confirm scheduling around the holiday period.
Fewer people overall, yes. But the kite community at Koh Phangan is year-round, and January brings a specific type of traveler — long-stay visitors, regulars, and focused learners. The social atmosphere is quieter but genuine.
