Water Visibility
Visibility at Koh Phangan's west coast (including Thong Sala area) is typically 3–8 metres — clear but not the dramatic 20+ metre visibility of the Similan Islands. The east coast and Ang Thong Marine Park offer better visibility: 8–15 metres at depth. For the clearest water, join a day trip to Ang Thong rather than snorkeling from Thong Sala Beach directly.
Snorkel Equipment
Basic snorkel masks and fins are available for rent at the beach and at dive shops in Thong Sala town (50–150 THB/day). For a better experience, buy a quality half-face mask or use your own prescription mask. The rental masks at most beach stalls are functional but do not seal well for all face shapes.
If you plan multiple snorkel sessions, buying a quality mask (600–1,500 THB from dive shops in Thong Sala) pays for itself within 3–4 days versus rental. The visibility difference between a well-fitted quality mask and a cheap rental is significant.
The best snorkeling around Koh Phangan is 1–2 hours before high tide. During high tide, deeper water over the reef means clearer water and more fish activity. Check a tide table app (Tide Now, Tides Near Me) before planning your snorkel session.
Combining Snorkeling with Your Kite Holiday
A typical kite holiday structure that includes snorkeling: 3-hour kite session in the morning (from 8:00 AM), lunch, snorkel session or Ang Thong day trip in the afternoon. This schedule keeps you active all day and ensures you are not sitting around on good-wind days.
Ang Thong Marine Park day trips depart from Thong Sala pier daily at approximately 8:30 AM and return by 5:30 PM. Book the day before at tour offices in Thong Sala town. Cost: 750–1,200 THB depending on operator — includes boat, national park entry, snorkel equipment, and lunch.
Frequently Asked Questions
The water immediately off Thong Sala Beach has limited marine life — it is a working beach area with boat traffic. Walk 15–20 minutes south to quieter stretches or take a short longtail boat ride (100–200 THB) to the nearest reef area. The beach is primarily for kite and swimming, not reef snorkeling.
Yes — the calm west-coast waters of Koh Phangan are very safe for beginner snorkelers. No significant currents, no dangerous marine life in the snorkeling areas, and depth is 1–5 metres over the reefs. Children 8+ can snorkel safely with adult supervision.
Turtle sightings are possible, particularly at Ang Thong Marine Park and around Koh Ma in the north. They are not guaranteed but are reported regularly by snorkel boat crews. The best chance of a turtle sighting is on an Ang Thong day trip.
mid-January through April offers the clearest visibility and calmest water. May–October can have reduced visibility due to plankton blooms and occasional rain-induced runoff. However, water is never truly bad at Koh Phangan — even in SW season (June–October), snorkeling is possible on calm days.
