Where to SUP at Koh Phangan
Thong Sala Beach in the morning (before 10 AM and after 4 PM) is the best time — wind is lightest and the water is glassiest. SUP on flat calm water is meditative and excellent full-body exercise. The bay is safe for exploration: 500–800 metres wide, sheltered, and with an easy return to the beach.
For longer SUP excursions: paddle south from Thong Sala along the coast (calm in the morning), or north to explore the coastline toward Ao Si Thanu (shallow bay, good for SUP). Avoid open water in the afternoon when wind builds — paddling upwind on a SUP in 15+ knots is challenging and tiring.
Who SUP Is For
- Kite visitors on rest days — Wind-independent activity. On no-wind days or rest days from kite lessons, SUP is the perfect way to stay on the water.
- Non-kiting travel companions — If your partner is not doing kite lessons, SUP gives them an activity at the same beach simultaneously.
- Post-session cooling down — A 30-minute SUP after a kite lesson is a relaxing way to finish the day on the water at lower intensity.
- Fitness and cross-training — SUP engages core, legs, and shoulders. An hour of SUP paddling is equivalent cardiovascular exercise to 30 minutes of moderate gym work.
First-time SUP? Start on your knees to get comfortable with board balance before standing. Once standing, soft knees (slightly bent) makes the board much more stable than locked-straight legs. Look at the horizon, not your feet.
Morning SUP sessions (7–9 AM) at Thong Sala before kite sessions produce the best experience. The water is completely flat, the light is beautiful, and the bay has very few other users. Several kite students have told us that their morning SUP became the highlight of their holiday — quieter and more personal than kite sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
No — basic SUP is one of the easiest water sports to start. Most people can stand up and paddle in calm water within 5–10 minutes. The challenge increases with wind and chop — start in calm morning conditions as a beginner.
Basic swimming ability is recommended. Falls from the SUP board into flat, shallow water are harmless, but you need to be comfortable in the water. An ankle leash keeps the board near you at all times.
Yes — children aged 8+ can use SUP with an adult present. We have boards in different sizes. Younger children (5–7) can ride in front of a standing adult on a wide stable board.
Koh Phangan has very limited surf compared to Koh Samui's east coast or Phuket. The west coast (Thong Sala area) is protected from most swell. SUP at Koh Phangan is primarily flat-water paddling. If you want surf SUP, east coast beaches in the SW season (June–October) occasionally have small rideable waves.
