Why Thong Sala Is Perfect for Learning
Thong Sala Beach sits on the protected west coast of Koh Phangan. During the SE season the wind arrives cross-onshore — blowing from the ocean onto the beach at a 90° angle. This is the safest possible wind direction for kitesurfing: if anything goes wrong, you drift sideways along the shore, not out to sea.
The lagoon in front of the beach is shallow and flat — no swell reaches it due to the island's geography blocking the open Gulf. Water depth in the lesson zone is 0.5–1.5m, sandy bottom. Falls are safe.
There are no reefs, rocks or obstacles in the downwind zone. The nearest boat traffic is the ferry pier, 500m to the north — well outside the kite area.
Location & Access
Thong Sala Beach is directly adjacent to Thong Sala town — the main hub of Koh Phangan. The beach is a 5-minute walk from the ferry pier. Taxis, scooter rentals, and songthaews all serve the area.

Thong Sala Spot FAQ
Yes — it is the best beginner kite spot in Koh Phangan. Flat-water lagoon, cross-onshore NE winds, shallow sandy bottom, IKO school on site. One of the safest spots in the Gulf of Thailand for learning.
Absolutely — it is specifically suited for beginners. Flat water, consistent wind, no obstacles in the downwind zone, and our instructors are on the beach every day during peak season. All beginner lessons are held here.
During the SE season (January–April), wind arrives cross-onshore from the NE — perpendicular to the beach. This is the safest kite direction: you drift along the shore, not out to sea. The SW season brings offshore-ish winds to this spot — we use other locations during the SW season.
